Our Founder’s Story: The Meaning Behind the Madilyn James Name

The toughest part is always coming up with the name because you want the name to tell the story.

While normally that’s a hard thing to do, I immediately thought of Madilyn James. She was my husband’s grandmother. Madilyn James was a preacher’s wife. She was an extremely kind soul. She was very welcoming. She was very approachable. And she was a lady of class, but she was also a lady of grit. She grew her own food. She made her own clothes. And she believed in sustainability long before sustainable fashion trends became popular.

Madilyn James believed in community.

She also believed in community and empowering those around her to live the life that they wanted to live. Madilyn James grew up in the country. That feeling of neighbors was very different. It wasn’t the person who lived right next door; it was the community. And people leaned on that community for many things, including food, clothing, and even financial support. I feel like she was kind of the leader of her community, and people looked to her in good times and in bad.

One thing I also love about using Madilyn James’s name…

Back when she was growing up, things were handcrafted. Skilled artisans made everything that they used. And today, it feels like most items are manufactured overseas and then drop-shipped here. While that may be cheaper for businesses, they are not exactly ethically sourced clothing brands.

And our goal at Madilyn James is to ensure that you are receiving a quality product that is exactly what it says it is. It’s an honor to share her last name and an honor to name Madilyn James after her because I know the three pillars she really stood by were empowerment, sustainability, and community.

Those are the values of Madilyn James.
